I can get a PE.. but not until 2014
Mar. 26th, 2007 10:34 amSo here's the scoop:
According to the PA board, I cannot take the FE exam. I'm contesting
this, but I highly doubt I'll succeed - their requirements say "ABET
accredited B.S. degree in engineering or Engineering/Technology
granted after June 30, 1994". The issue is that the UC Berkeley BS
degree program in Civil Engineering is ABET accredited, but the MS
degree (in the same department) is not.
If I had an ABET-accredited BS, I'd take the FE exam now, then
complete 4 years experience working under a PE, then I'd take the PE
exam, then I'd be licensed.
Without an ABET-accredited BS degree:
NO DEGREE: Qualifying experience started after February 19, 1991 -
needs 8 years of progressive experience in engineering work
equivalent to that attained through graduation from an approved
engineering curriculum. Experience gained needs to be under
supervision of PE or similarly qualified individual (Refer to Rules &
Regulations).
So I need 8 years experience, then I would take the FE exam in 2014,
then I would get ANOTHER 4 years experience (as an Engineer In
Training) then take the PE exam and become licensed. So the soonest I
can be licensed is twelve years from now, in 2018.
The other option is to attempt to get my Professional Geologist
license. To do that, I need either 3 years working under a PG (none of
my bosses are PG's - they're all only PE's) or I need 5 years
experience not under a PG.
So basically, it looks like I'll be waiting until 2012 to take the PG
exam. No licensure is anywhere in my future. What does this mean for
me professionally? I have no clue yet - I'll find out more once I talk
to my various bosses.
Argh. At least yesterday I got to go out on my first hash and enjoyed
the sun. (More on that later).
Off to deliver samples.. whee!
