Animals of Mumbai
Feb. 26th, 2006 11:33 amDozens of dead chickens, de-feathered and sitting in large metal tubs in the corridor of the Crawford Market. Brilliantly yellow feet splayed at all angles.
A white cat turned smoky grey from pollution, licking its haunches in an abandoned lot near Victoria Terminus train station.
Two full sized goats with beautiful spiral horns wearing handmade rope harnesses, standing on the sidewalk in front of auto repair stalls beneath the flyover in the center of town. As I walk past, one goat mounts the other.
A cream colored cat with grey markings hanging upside down from a parked bicycle behind a street vendor on the side of the Colaba Causeway, front and back paws tied with faded green rope and brown twine, long since dead.
A small collie mutt, sandy reddish color, lying on a corner in Colaba a few blocks from the previously mentioned cat. Not certain he was dead, but the way the wind ruffled his hair he looked pretty stiff.
Two small cows wearing richly embroidered blanket coverings, being led around a corner near Juma Masjid by a small man with dreadlocks.
A dog lying on the sidewalk in Colaba with a walnut-sized bloody wound on his lower stomach and a huge doggie smile on his face.
Dozens and dozens of crows circling high overhead in the Moslem neighbourhood near Crawford Market. What were they scavenging?
A middle-aged scruffy common monkey wearing a collar, being led down the sidewalk across from Victoria Terminus by a middle aged scruffy homeless woman. The woman carries an infant on her hip, the monkey carries a crust of bread.
