I'm in Bangalore. I arrived about five hours ago.

So far:

  • Bought one latte for 38 rupees. Note: coffee and chai at the train station / bus station never cost more than 5 rupees.
  • Bought a chicken sandwich for 53 rupees. It wasn't very good.
  • Walked past a Levis store and an SF Jeans store chuckling.
  • Found a bunch of good lookin' bookshops. I'll come back when I have more time.
  • Got milked on a hotel room: 360 rupees for a room not as nice as my 145 rupee room in Hassan. Louder, too.
  • Found an internet cafe (where I currently reside) playing bad Hindi pop on a western-style radio station.
  • Listened to the Backstreet Boys at full volume while drinking earlier referenced latte. Cringed.
  • Spotted at least a dozen wannabe Indian gangstas complete with Timberlands, vacant stares and baggy dark jeans with big pockets.
  • Found a good sweets shop across the street from my hotel.
  • EDIT: Add to that list- ate Dominoes pizza and watched a movie in English (Chronicles of Narnia: I agree with [livejournal.com profile] headlouse's assessment of it).

Two months to the day until [livejournal.com profile] avocado_tom arrives. Head in a happy crazy spin. The 3 hour train ride this morning helped re-center me and re-motivate me for being here. I'm settled into traveling alone, and I'm enjoying that strength and silence.

Mysore was a disappointment: Amusement Park India. Saw it all in one day, didn't feel like hanging around. Left 2 days early.

Next stop: Hampi. I think. Of course, my plans depend to some extent on how well I get along with Justin A., a burner friend-of-friends from NYC. I'm meeting him in 2 days when he arrives from London. It's his first trip to India - fun! Company from the same subculture is always nice. If we get along well, I may change my plans to travel with him for a while.. who knows.

At some point soon I'll transcribe a recent paper journal entry about the emotional/financial/social value of riding the bus. First, though, I'm off to a pub for a good draught beer and some reading. (Currently re-reading "Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" - much more accessible now that I know a bit about Buddhism, motorcycles and working with my hands).
